An offshore retirement

“Initially we bought our Moody AC 41 “White Satin” to sail the Atlantic Rally for Cruisers which had always been a long held ambition. Afterwards a sunny season in the Caribbean – that was the idea to start our retirement. But a sailing life is difficult to predict. When we first saw the Moody AC 41 at the London Boat Show we were immediately impressed with the spacious cockpit. During the handover in Greifswald the Baltic Sea captured our imagination so we decided to discover Bornholm, Sweden and Copenhagen before returning to the UK via the Kiel Canal. Back home we prepared our yacht for ocean sailing and added a watermaker, a bimini and solar panels. Best idea of all was to invest in the Parasailor, which is just perfect for downwind sailing.

he ARC just went fabulous. Thanks to the spacious living comfort our crew of six managed the demanding passage in the best mood without any signs of cabin fever. The easy access to the galley turned out as extremely practicable in rolling seas. Finally we completed the race as the 41st boat out of 152 competitors in the category “cruising”. This was beyond our expectations and a respectable performance for us!

Currently our yacht is moored in Plymouth at the South Coast of England. This sailing area provides an excellent range of scenic cruising destinations like Cornwall or the Channel Islands. For this summer we intend to sail to the Isles of Scilly. This archipelago is a little paradise in almost tropical conditions and is much closer to home than the Caribbean. We also aim to spend spring and autumn living aboard with Tilley, our lively Labrador. He really found his sea-legs and loves to join me as co-skipper at the steering position. Of course family and friends will also take a short timeout aboard with us. If you see us on our travels you will be most welcome to say “Hello!”

Yours,
David Addey
