Developing CO2-neutral drives
More and more vehicles with environmentally friendly fuels and alternative drives are being used. But what about emission-free systems for sports yachts? In order to advance the development of a CO2-neutral propulsion system for yachts, HanseYachts AG participates in Campfire Alliance, a basic research project that will help develop the world's first fuel cell yacht. The system works with ammonia and the hydrogen that is bound there in nitrogen. An integrated power system should be developed using ammonia as the power source.
International research institutions are participating in the project, which is funded by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research with 48 million euros. These include the Fuel Cell Technology Center, several Fraunhofer Institutes and the Colorado Fuel Cell Center. The ships would then sail over the sea “without carbon”, says Angela Kruth from the Leibniz Institute for Plasma Research in Greifswald, Germany.
There will be a functional, CO2-neutral alternative to the classic diesel engine that is available in series for sports yachts. By participating in the Campfire project, the foundation stone has now been laid for new climate-friendly solutions for boating.
