Owners of the Dehler sailing yacht Saga sit on their baiting platform in harbor accompanied by dog

A saga begins

Always ahead on the Dehler 38 SQ

Sometimes it is fate to find the right yacht. The Swedish couple Maria and Måns Hallström have been married for 25 years and have collected a lot of sailing experiences on different types of smaller sailboats. Now the timing felt right to develop into real “yacht owners”. After some reflection, Maria reminded her husband which boats always outdistanced them: Dehler yachts. They started searching for Dehler sailboats and got stuck with the new Dehler 38 SQ pretty quickly. Nine months later they signed the contract and picked up their new boat “SAGA”, named after the Swedish word for “fairy tale”, in Greifswald, Germany.

“It is a fantastic, fast sailboat. She provides a sailing performance that we have never experienced before. We really like the design and the quality of both equipment and the way she was built. Although we have three cabins, everyone is keen on sleeping in the great master cabin, especially our two grandchildren Majken and Iris. The cockpit is amazing with the fold-down bathing platform that has become the family's favourite place”, raves Måns. Also, their fluffy crew member “Laura”, a three-year-old wire fox terrier, got used to the swaying boat under her paws. She appreciates the wide running deck to keep an all-round view of everything to defend the boat from all sides in the marina. But when under sail she is a little chicken and prefers to sit on the lap of her mistress.

From their home port Råå just south of Helsingborg in Sweden, they sailed their first season in their home waters, Öresund. Peppered with many marinas and cultural attractions, the strait between Denmark and Sweden connects the Baltic Sea with the Kattegat. It is particularly busy and just 2.5 nautical miles wide at its narrowest point. The couple first set out to explore the Swedish island Ven. Located between Seeland and Schonen it’s known for its beautiful cliffs, white beaches and quaint cottages. Of course, an extensive city trip to Copenhagen was not be missed. Another cruise took them to Mölle, a popular bathing resort and lies at the tip of Kullen peninsula, ideal to test the yacht’s qualities as a cruising boat. Next year they want to take advantage of Saga's sailing speed and explore more distant destinations. Where exactly is not yet determined, but reaching new ports and places where they have never been before exerts a magical attraction on the Hallström family. In the long term, they want to head south and cross the Atlantic Ocean – and this time not being outdistanced by the other sailing yachts.

We wish them many more great cruises and much joy with their Dehler 38 SQ.
